Role Summary
We are looking for a skilled and motivated Working Foreman to take a leading role on our sites. This is a hands-on position where you will be responsible for both directly performing trade tasks and supervising a small team of operatives and subcontractors. The ideal candidate will have a strong all-round trade background, with excellent knowledge of groundworks, M&E (Mechanical and Electrical) coordination, carpentry, and internal finishing. You will be the linchpin on site, ensuring work is completed safely, on time, to the highest quality standards, and in accordance with drawings and specifications.
Key Responsibilities
1. Leadership & Supervision:
- Lead by example, working hands-on alongside the team to complete projects efficiently.
- Supervise, direct, and mentor site operatives and subcontractors.
- Allocate daily tasks and manage labour resources effectively.
- Conduct toolbox talks and ensure clear communication across the team.
2. Health & Safety:
- Promote and enforce a zero-harm culture on site.
- Ensure all site activities comply with company Health, Safety, and Environmental policies, as well as CDM 2015 regulations.
- Conduct daily site inspections, risk assessments, and method statements.
- Maintain a clean, tidy, and safe site, ensuring welfare facilities are in good order.
3. Quality & Technical Execution:
- Possess and apply excellent practical knowledge across key project phases:
- Groundworks: Setting out (with supervision), excavation, foundations, drainage, and sub-base preparation.
- M&E Coordination: Understanding of mechanical and electrical first and second fix requirements, ensuring conduits, boxes, and pathways are correctly positioned for trades.
- Carpentry: First and second fix carpentry, including structural timber work, framing, and installation of doors/windows.
- Finishing: High-quality internal finishing, including skirting, architrave, kitchen fitting, and final snagging.
- Read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and technical details.
- Ensure all work is completed to the highest standard of quality and in line with building regulations.
- Proactively identify and resolve technical issues before they impact the programme.
4. Programming & Planning:
- Work with the Project Manager to develop short-term programmes and ensure daily/weekly targets are met.
- Monitor progress and report any delays or issues to the Project Manager promptly.
- Manage materials, plant, and equipment, coordinating deliveries and ensuring resources are available when needed.
Person Specification
Essential Skills & Experience:
- Proven experience as a Working Foreman or a Senior Tradesperson in the UK construction industry.
- A strong, multi-skilled trade background with demonstrable, hands-on experience in:
- Groundworks and foundations.
- Coordinating with M&E trades.
- First and second fix carpentry.
- High-quality internal finishing.
- Excellent understanding of UK Health, Safety and Environmental legislation (e.g., SMSTS/SSSTS qualification is highly desirable).
- Ability to read and work from construction drawings.
- IT literate with a good understanding of site paperwork (e.g., timesheets, allocation sheets, site diaries).
- A full, valid UK driver's licence.
